Greater Things

TEXT: John 1:50:

50Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

John 14:12:

12Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

Thank God for great things He has already done for us as individual and as a corporate body.  But God is going to do greater things.  We can see how technology is doing bigger things – mention some new innovations e.g. computer, astronauts going to the moon and other planets, GPS, telecommunication devices that can capture the whole world.  But God is going to do bigger things.

What must we do in order for us to do greater things?

  1. We must prepare for greater things; Joshua encouraged the Israelites to get themselves ready for special divine visitation.

 Joshua 3:5:

5And Joshua said unto the people, sanctify yourselves: for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you.

  • God called the people to sanctify themselves.
  • We can apply this to our lives and also to the entire congregation in our local church.
  • We need to be set apart for the spirit of God to cleanse us.
  • The disciples of Jesus were asked to wait in the upper room before they got baptized in the Holy Ghost.

Jesus admonished his disciples to wait specially for the power of God. They waited until the day when they were endued with the power of the Holy Ghost.

Luke 24:49:

49And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Hebrews 1:9:

9Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Acts 10:38:

38How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

  1. We must pray for greater things.
  • The disciples of old prayed for hands of God to do signs and wonders;
  • They prayed for boldness to witness;
  • They prayed for boldness to preach the Word;
  • They prayed for healing.

Acts 4:29-31:

29And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,

30By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.

31And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

  • They prayed against their enemies;
  • We need to pray for spiritual breakthroughs;
  • We need to pray for fresh fire upon our lives and ministries;
  • We need to pray for abundant grace, for Holy life style, for provision;
  • Pray for spiritual awakening and revival in our parish and community, in our family;
  • We need to pray for human resources – for the Lord of havest to send in laborers;
  • We need to pray for growth, for church planting, house fellowship.

Luke 10:2:

2Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

Psalm 2:8:

8Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

Jeremiah 33:3:

3Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

  • We need to pray for God to strengthen you for greater challenges ahead;
  • We need to pray for new anointing and power.

Isaiah 40:31:

31But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

  1. Trust/Believe God for greater things

Hebrews 11:16:

16But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

Daniel 11:32b:

32 but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.

Matthew 19:26:

26But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Luke 1:37:

37For with God nothing shall be impossible.

Luke 18:27:

27And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.

  • We must educate ourselves to believe God. We must have faith in God.  We must trust God to do the impossible in our lives;
  • Unbelieve will lead us to nowhere;
  • Believe God for the salvation of the people around you;
  • Believe God for provision, for good things in life, for healing, for anointing or power, for miracle, for the outpouring of the Holy Ghost.
  • Believe God for better places, better job, business, opportunities, for unbelievable increase and breakthroughs.

 Psalm 60:12:

12Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.

Psalm 60:8:

8Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe: Philistia, triumph thou because of me.

1 Chronicles 4:10:

10And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

  • Believe God for signs and wonders and greater miracles;

Hebrews 2:4:

4God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

Hebrews 4:2:

2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

James 5:17-18:

17Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.

18And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

James 1:5-8:

5If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

6But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

7For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

8A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Hebrews 11:6:

6But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Ephesians 3:20:

20Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

NOTE:  There is no limit to what you can believe God for.

  • Get out of your present size.
  1. Work for greater things

John 14:12:

12Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

  • Evangelism, follow up, show brotherly kindness, give for God’s work

John 14:13:

13And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

John 14:14:

14If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

  • So many people work for money, but there is no greater work than winning souls for Jesus Christ.
  • Our best efforts and best resources must be focused on saving souls for Christ.
  • We must not be idle in the Church.

Conclusion

  • See what the scripture says about Barnabas and Paul.
  • Great work of Paul and Barnabas

 Acts 15:25-26:

25It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

26Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

See also Esther 4 – Esther stood up for the Jews.

 Proverbs 11:30:

30The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

Matthew 6:33:

33But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Luke 15:7:

7I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Acts 4:33-34:

33And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

34Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,

Acts 4:5:

5And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes,

 Acts 4:36-37:

36And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,

37Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

  • Contrast this with the work of Ananais & Sapphira.

NOTE:  Also great work of Solomon – He built a magnificent temple and it was the best for his generation for God and God visited him.
